A flavour explosion with every spoon this apple crumble is going to blow your mind! Caramelised apples with a crunchy, nutty topping. Serve it warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. This classic dessert is always a winner.

There is something extra special about warm desserts served with ice cream! It’s the perfect combination and the ultimate comfort food. When that ice cream hits the crumble and begins to melt thats when the magic happens!

Do you eat it quick before it melts? Or are you more of a let it melt and mix it through? Whichever one describes you, I think we can all agree that apple crumble is a dessert we can never get sick of.

Perfect when you are hosting a dinner party because this dessert can be made ahead. When you are serving main course all you need to do is place it in the oven and let your guests enjoy the amazing aromas coming from your kitchen.

The ultimate Apple Crumble recipe

Here are just a few reasons why this is the ultimate apple crumble recipe.

Sweet but not sickly sweet this apple crumble recipe is so good because it has jut the right balance between the sweetness of the crumble and the tartness of the apples.

The apples are perfectly cooked through but still have the bit of bite. The crumble has a wonderful crunch but is not dry.

I Love how the crumble mostly still holds together making it look pretty on the plate. Well, as pretty as crumbles get.

Unlike apple pie, where you are required to cook the apples before adding them to your pie this crumble recipe is a one pot wonder. Everything is baked at the same time. Which means less time and less dishes for you.

Have I won you over yet?

I promise you that once you have a taste you just keep going back for more. This will quickly become a family favourite recipe and one that you will go back to time and time again.

How to make the ultimate apple crumble

Start by peeling and coring your apples and cutting them into small cubes, around 1-2cm (so they cook faster) and place them at the bottom of your baking dish.

Cubed apples

Sprinkle the apples with sugar, cinnamon and flour then squeeze over lemon juice. It’s these wonderful flavours that are going to make your kitchen smell amazing!

In a seperate bowl, add oats, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and almonds. Mix well and pour in melted butter.

For this next part I find using my hands works best. Mix the ingredients together until you have a wet and crumbly mixture.

Spread the mixture over your apples. As you do this you must resist the urge to grab a spoon and dig in. Patience my friend! I know it smells so so good!

Now the apple crumble is ready to bake. It’s that simple!

Which apples to use for apple crumble

I used pink lady apples because they are our family favourite! But you can use any apples that you have at home.

If you prefer more tartness than sweet then I suggest using the green Granny Smith apples.

Any red apple varieties will give you the sweetness.

Alternatives to this apple crumble

this recipe is for the classic apple crumble but you can use this recipe as a base and run with it.

Pears can be used for an equally yummy crumble dessert.

Add strawberries, rhubarb or raspberries to your apple mixture.

In summer I also love using stone fruits such as peaches and apricots for a yummy variation to the classic.
