What I love about this recipe is as you can see, the spaghetti is not drenched in cream, making it a healthy family dinner. For a dish to be creamy it does not need to be drenched in cream! This pasta is going to leave you feeling great!

There are so many beautiful flavours in the pasta you want every individual ingredient to compliment the dish and not overpower it.

What is hot smoked salmon

I sometimes call this dish cheats salmon pasta and thats because the main ingredient is hot smoked salmon.

Hot smoked salmon is cured in salty water usually overnight and then smoked. The difference between smoked salmon and hot smoked salmon is that smoked salmon is smoked at a low temperature so it doesn’t actually cook the fish (approx. 90 degrees) that’s why it has that raw-like texture. On the other hand hot smoked salmon is smoked at a higher temperature (120 degrees).

Hot smoked salmon is ready to be eaten straight from the packet and It’s great for pastas, salads and even dips.

Ingredients for 20 minute pasta dish

Because this is such an easy recipe we are only going to use 8 ingredients! You will find some of the usual suspects for salmon pasta. I love the combination of all these flavours; creaminess, saltiness and freshness.

With hot smoked salmon I use 300g so two x 150g packets. Each packet is a serving of three portions (50g per person).

  • Spaghetti
  • Butter
  • Garlic
  • Capers
  • Thickened Cream
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Hot smoked salmon
  • Parsley

How to make this deliciously creamy salmon pasta

Start by bringing a large pot of water to the boil. Once boiling, salt the water well, add the pasta and cook as per the packet instructions.

The recipe calls for spaghetti but you can use any pasta that you fancy.

Heat butter in a large skillet or frying pan. Once the butter starts to foam add garlic and capers. Cook for 2 minutes stirring frequently so that the garlic does not burn.

In these 2 minutes you want to crisp up the capers and release all that wonderful flavour from the garlic and the capers. (Im salivating!)

Next add cream, bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Add parsley and parmesan and continue to cook until your pasta is ready.

Base of the creamy sauce

Remove hot smoked salmon from packaging and discard the skin. Break up into large flakes and stir through the sauce. Season well.

Once the pasta is cooked, drain the pasta, reserving a cup of the starchy water and return the pasta to the pot. Pour over the sauce along with a good splash of the reserved cooking water and toss it all through.

Do not skip adding the starchy water, this is the secret to making every pasta dish luscious and silky.

Ensure the pasta is evenly coated in the beautiful sauce.

Serve with an extra sprinkle of parmesan cheese.
