It’s time for some fun with this classic mojito cocktail. A mix of rum, zesty lime and refreshing soda water will make these a hit at your next party.

Mojitos are one of my all time favourite cocktails, especially in Summer because they are so refreshing and delicious. With every sip you get that burst of flavour from the zesty lime, the smooth rum and the freshness from the mint. I actually never thought about making them at home until my husband suggested it and I realised how easy they were to put together.

If refreshing cocktails are what you after you must also check out my Prosecco berry punch.

The ingredients are simple, the steps are easy and it takes little effort to look like your a pro bartender as you mix these up for your friends.

What is in a classic Mojito Cocktail?

  • Fresh Limes; don’t use the bottled stuff, fresh is best!
  • Sugar: This sweetens the cocktail and balances out the lime and the rum.
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • White rum: use a good quality rum such as Bacardi . White rum is typically used in Mojitos because of It’s lighter, sweet, tropical taste. You could substitute with vodka but it won’t be as sweet.
  • Soda water to top up your glass and give the cocktail some refreshing bubbles.

Tips for making awesome mojitos

  • Don’t use regular white sugar. You will get tennis elbow before you will get that to dissolve. Use caster sugar, It’s super fine and will save you so much time and your elbow!
  • Ditch the cocktail shaker! Mojitos are made in their serving glasses. Use a rolling pin to “muddle” the lime, sugar and mint. This process involves pressing and twisting to release all the flavours and those delightful aromas!
  • Use lots of ice because no one wants a warm mojito! For best results after you have muddled the lime, sugar and mint fill the glass to the brim with ice and then pour over the gin. If you want to go the extra step, chill the glasses in the freezer for 5-10 minutes before you start.
  • Play around and have fun with it. You may like your mojito a little stronger, a little sweeter, maybe a little bit zestier. Play around with the quantities to suite your individual taste.
